NV Energy signs agreement to join Extended Day-Ahead Market

Nevada’s largest utility is 9th energy provider to formally commit to joining EDAM

FOLSOM, Calif. – NV Energy, an investor-owned utility serving more than 1.5 million customers in Nevada, has become the 9th Western energy provider to commit to joining the new Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM) for wholesale electricity and related services.

The joint announcement by NV Energy and the California Independent System Operator (ISO) underscores the growing regional commitment to a shared day-ahead market that can enhance reliability, improve operational efficiency, and better connect energy resources across the West. NV Energy plans to begin participating in the market in 2028.

“NV Energy looks forward to working with the California ISO and other EDAM participants to build on the successful experience of the Western Energy Imbalance Market, better utilize generation and transmission resources across the West, and promote shared savings for our customers,” said Brandon Barkhuff, President and CEO.

“As recognized by the Nevada Public Utilities Commission in its order authorizing NV Energy’s participation in EDAM, ‘the most important factor in delivering economic and reliability benefits through a day-ahead market is the connectivity between NV Energy and other potential participants as well as the connectivity those entities have with each other.’ We believe EDAM’s broad regional participation will help unlock those benefits for Nevada customers while supporting a more reliable and efficient electric grid.”

NV Energy has been participating in the real-time Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM) since 2015. According to the ISO’s most recent quarterly benefits report, the Nevada utility has realized more than $1.1 billion in financial savings since joining the WEIM. Those benefits are projected to increase with participation in the day-ahead market because that is where the vast majority of energy transactions occur.

EDAM launched successfully on May 1 with the California ISO and PacifiCorp’s two balancing areas. Portland General Electric is on track to begin participating October 1, 2026, and four different entities are joining next year -- Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Balancing Authority of Northern California, Public Service Company of New Mexico, and Turlock Irrigation District. The Imperial Irrigation District plans to join in 2028, along with BHE Montana. Several other Western utilities are also considering joining EDAM.

“Nevada is rapidly emerging as a critical energy hub for the West, and NV Energy’s formal participation in the Extended Day-Ahead Market is a big step towards achieving that goal,” said Elliot Mainzer, the ISO’s President and CEO. “This move will deliver meaningful reliability and cost benefits to Nevada consumers while also strengthening the connectivity and value of WEIM and EDAM across the region. We’re excited for what’s ahead as the market footprint continues to expand.”

The ISO and Western energy stakeholders worked closely together in designing EDAM to build on the proven success and tangible benefits of the Western Energy Imbalance Market, which has resulted in more than $9 billion in cumulative savings for participating entities and their customers since its 2014 start.

EDAM uses the ISO’s sophisticated technology platform to find the least-cost electricity the day before it is needed so market participants can meet demand as cost-effectively as possible. The market also increases regional coordination and reliability while supporting the different energy policy goals of participating states.

About the Western Energy Markets

The Western Energy Markets include the Western Energy Imbalance Market (WEIM) and the Extended Day-Ahead Market (EDAM), which provide regional market coordination across the West. The WEIM, launched in 2014, helps participants balance electricity supply and demand in real time and has delivered billions in benefits to market participants and their customers. EDAM began operation in 2026 and extends those benefits into the day-ahead timeframe through broader regional coordination. The Western Energy Markets Governing Body has primary decision-making authority over market rules specific to the WEIM and EDAM.
